Port Colborne Project
PORT COLBORNE
05.05.2025

In our last update for Port Colborne, we highlighted the successful completion of the fieldwork, including the hydrogeological and subwatershed studies. Our team is currently focused on the necessary environmental and archeological assessments. The first stages of these assessments have been submitted to the city, awaiting review.
The Official Plan Amendment (OPA) and Zoning By-law Amendment (ZBA) processes are currently in progress. The City has hired a consultant to assist with these applications, and we are awaiting comments on the peer review from the consultant. We anticipate receiving feedback sometime this month.
Additionally, we have exciting news for Port Colborne: Asahi Kasei and Honda have partnered to build a new electric vehicle battery separator plant in the area. They have already broken ground, and a $98 million grant has been secured to support the plant's infrastructure. Through our ongoing advocacy, we successfully persuaded the city and government to extend the main water force to our property, nearly 500 meters, resulting in significant savings by avoiding this substantial external cost. The remaining 500-meter extension was initially our responsibility, but after further lobbying, the city was able to secure a federal grant to halve those costs. We are now working to reduce the remaining expenses even further by exploring the possibility of the city partnering with us on these costs. This represents major financial savings and is accelerating our progress on the project.
This joint venture strengthens Ontario’s end-to-end electric vehicle and battery supply chain, which will significantly enhance the local economy. This development adds tremendous value to our project, making it even more attractive for future growth and investment.
In parallel, our team recently met with the city, and they have expressed interest in purchasing 300 homes from us. We are scheduled to meet again next month to discuss the next steps in more detail. The city has assured us that they are committed to expediting this process to address housing needs and are eager for both projects to move forward in tandem.
